Since 2014 I have mainly been working in the traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique, (Mokuhanga) which uses multiple blocks, water-based pigments, brushes, and hand printing multiple layers on dampened paper.
The traditional Japanese method combines painting and printmaking which greatly appeals to me: Instead of using a roller, one uses brushes to scrub the pigment in to the wood thus being able to achieve a painterly effect.
I enjoy the process of creating a woodblock print: From the drawing, to the carving and printing, a process unfolds and a series of decisions are made to create a strong and peaceful image.”
